IA Multi-Sectoral Humanitarian Needs’ Assessment Report in Kellem Wollega Zone

  • The information received from Busa Gonofa of Kellem Wollega Zone indicated 103,606 people were displaced due to conflict in 11 woredas of the zone since December2017.From the total IDPs 51% are female. So far, no return of IDPs to their place of origin reported.
  • An estimated 359,879 people need health services and interventions including host communities in the zone.
  • In the last nine months, a total of 97,852 children were screened for malnutrition, 4,583 were identified as SAM cases and 21,546 were identified MAM cases. The GAM rate in the zone was reported to be 27%.
  • Armed conflict with NSAGs and Government security forces kept causing human displacement, killing, hostage, looting and damage of properties.
  • In all the four IDP hosting woredas visited, the majority of the IDPs are living in the community except in Gawo Kebe Woreda where IDPs sheltered in collective site with meagre access to basic needs, on average had received only 25kg of wheat/maize per household in November2023. In some visited woredas, the IDPs reported as they received food in 2022.
  • IDPs who participated in focus group discussions (FGDs) stated that access to food, health services, shelter, safe drinking water and education becoming a luxury for them mentioning safety and security is their priority that the government need to ensure for them.
  • The IDPs have limited access to humanitarian assistance, but the most priority needs mentioned by the IDPs and observed by the mission team are Food, Shelter, NFIs, WASH, Health, and Protection. The local response capacity remains weak.
